EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY: Northeastern Vermont AHEC is seeking a full-time, year round HEALTH SCIENCE EDUCATOR

The AHEC Health Science Educator’s primary role is to prepare students for post-secondary training and careers in health science fields including health care, public health, mental and behavioral health care, dental health & social work.  Education, training and outreach occurs in community and school settings in northern Vermont.  The Health Science Educator develops, oversees and manages Northeastern Vermont AHEC’s print and online resources, programs & outreach activities relating to health sciences and health career development. The Health Science Educator will work primarily with secondary and postsecondary students.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop curriculum and lesson plans for classroom and community-based health science enrichment programs for grades 5 through 16.
  • Provide instruction in a variety of topic areas, including anatomy and physiology, human growth and development, social determinants of health, Health career pathways, professional standards, ethics, professional communication, health maintenance, and interprofessional teamwork.
  • Align curricula and lesson plans with state and national education standards.
  • Conduct formative and summative assessments of student learning.
  • Participate in evaluation of programs and activities.
  • Lead summer health career exploration programs.
  • Coordinate with external faculty and presenters
  • Deliver health science content training and teaching training to college-aged mentors. 
  • Collaborate with the Vermont AHEC team to build partnerships and linkages focused on strengthening health careers programming at the community level.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to school faculty and staff to improve health career guidance to students.
  • Other duties, as assigned.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Skills in curricular or program development are highly desirable.
  • License or certification as a health care professional a plus.
  • Vermont Educator License with secondary level and/or science instruction endorsement a plus.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:  
  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in education, science, or a health related field of study.
  • Two to four years direct experience with education, outreach and training at the secondary or post-secondary level.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven ability to plan and develop programs.
  • Experience in program management, coordination and implementation.
  • Be willing to work “on-call” during the summer residential programs as well as to work after hours and/or on weekends as needed.
  • Be willing to travel through the Northern Vermont region.
  • Have and maintain at all times a valid Vermont driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Must be able to utilize own transportation during work time.
  • Must be able to transport materials and/or equipment as needed.
